Destination Wedding Mexico
It’s Easy Being Green in Cabo Words by Sarah Padilla Photos courtesy of (in order) the Mexico Board of Tourism and Baja Outback
Mexico has always been known as a land of vibrant colors. But recently, one color has been shining a little brighter – green.
Well established as a luxurious destination wedding locale, Los Cabos – located at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula – is becoming known as a perfect destination for eco-conscious brides and grooms who want to leave a lasting impression on their guests, but not on Mother Earth.
Less is mor e décor
Surrounded by beautiful beaches and peppered with colorful buildings, Los Cabos is a postcard-perfect setting on it’s own. Whether a simple beach ceremony or a sit-down dinner, the area’s indigenous flora can easily take the place of more traditional wedding décor. The lush landscaping at the area’s resorts practically guarantee breathtaking photographs. Especially Capella Pedregal, the Playa Grande Resort and Grand Spa, the Westin Resort and Spa and the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar Resort and Spa.
Fresh fabulous food
Forget what you thought you knew about Mexican food, dining in Los Cabos is an experience in itself. An abundance of fresh, local and organic seafood and produce means that couples can host a memorable feast without the guilt of serving foods that have been shipped. For a variety of fresh, traditional dishes – and a killer margarita – check out Mi Casa Restaurant, a sprawling open-air hotspot in Cabo San Lucas. www.micasarestaurant.com
Take it outside
Even the biggest homebodies can’t help but get in touch with nature in here. From strolling along the beach to kayaking and snorkeling near the iconic Arco de Cabo San Lucas and horseback riding through the surrounding desert terrain, honeymooners are really the only visitors that can justify holing up in their hotel room. Adventure c ompanies, like Baja Outback, offer numerous packages for guests who want to vacation off the beaten path.
A sign of the rise in eco-tourism, Baja Outback and many local resorts have begun working together to protect the area’s baby sea turtles, which hatch in nests buried along the shore before making their way to the ocean. You’ve heard of releasing white doves at weddings? Green brides and grooms can invite their guests to participate in a baby sea turtle release – arguably one of the cutest experiences ever. Winter wedding guests will also likely witness the area’s well-known annual gray whale migration. www.bajaoutback.com
Relax
Going green doesn’t mean that eco-conscious couples shouldn’t get pampered, too. While Cabo is full of world-renowned spas, nature lovers might be interested in the Thalassotherapy Spa at Playa Grande, which uses water directly from the Sea of Cortez and is said to help rebalance energy, relieve stress and restore the skin. Is it possible to become more at one with nature than that?
