Destination Wedding HawaiiO’ahu: Engaging Town and Country Words by Courtney Cox The island of O’ahu is lovingly referred to as “the heart of Hawaii” and it’s sure to steal yours with its lush landscapes and notoriously laid back lifestyle. It boasts some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, but has all the amenities of a modern metropolis. Waikiki, once a playground for H awaiian royalty, is a must-see and just minutes from downtown Honolulu. Spend the day surfing the legendary waters or treat your guests to breathtaking views with a hike up Diamond Head. For a bit of Hawaiian history, take a tour of Iolani Palace. Later, cruise on over to Chinatown for some world-class cuisine. Indigo is one of President Obama’s favorites and Chef Glenn Chu is serving up fresh island-fusion fair daily. If you’re looking for a real romantic night out, consider Chef Mavro. This AAA Five Diamond Restaurant is headed by Chef George Mavrothalassitis, a James Beard Foundation Award winner. The former Frenchman now calls Hawaii home and changes the restaurant’s menu every season to ensure only the finest island ingredients. If holding a destination wedding in Waikiki, consider the bustling Hilton Hawaiian Village (top, left). A sprawling property with seven different towers and located on the widest stretch of Waikiki beach, it is perfect for large groups and offers a bevy of activities right on site. For a more secluded and romantic take on the island of O’ahu, head 20 miles west to the KoOlina resort area. The J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa is the choice for resident Hawaiians and is rented out by the NFL every year during the Pro Bowl for its professional players (right). The J.W. Marriott Ihilani is a popular wedding spot not only for its lagooned landscapes, but for its unbeatable bridal services. The resort’s Bridal Boutique is the first of its kind in the area and is a place for couples to go and plan their dream wedding from start to finish. O’ahu is the perfect place for adventurous honeymooners and romantic, engaged couples alike. No matter your interests or intentions, O’ahu’s town and country has something for everyone.
